All Tressed Up

Deciding whether to wear hair long and flowing or in a glamorous upsweep has caused many a bride to lose their precious beauty sleep. (Under eye help here)  For every dress, personality, wedding style, there are literally hundred, nay thousand of 'Do options. There is no lack for inspiration - take a gander at Pinterest or any number of image heavy wedding blogs. So how do you decide?

Here are 4 of the hottest wedding styles this season to get you started on the right track:

Effortless and Down - Perfect for your rustic, outdoor, diy wedding style; it says, I am natural and I want to be and look like me on my wedding day.

Romantic Whimsical Updo - I love these updos; they can be flirty, unfussy, add depth and dimension to a total look, be sassy or sensual. I appreciate that they aren't always uniform or perfect, leaving lots of room for individual personality.

Simple Side Bun - Classic, chic, timeless, all around perfect choice for an understated look....let your face be the focus.  Easily created, this is a gorgeous 'do for any wedding style.

Ultimately, you have to take into consideration your hair texture and length, dress style and wedding theme, and of course shape of your face. Having gotten married twice (to the same man) in hot climates, I would also recommend taking the time of year into consideration....remember there will be lots of dancing and hugging and kissing; hot and sticky can ruin the locks and the look!  Leave plenty of time for trail and error; you want to say I Do to the 'Do that's right for you.

What hairstyle are you going with for you big day? We would love to share your photos here on de Lovely Affair!  Don't forget us on FACEBOOK and TWITTER. Come say hi!

{Tuesday Beauty Tips} 4 Fixes for Pre-Wedding Eye Trouble

Man, there is nothing worse that crappy skin and dull eyes especially leading up to only the BIGGEST DAY of your life! Truth is planning your wedding will inevitably stress out your skin and lead to more than a few flare ups.

Your eyes are the most important facial feature and the biggest indicator of a lack of sleep. Sagging, crepe-like skin is just no good with all the cheek kissing and close up pictures on your wedding day. What you need is healthy, glowing skin, sans crepe and sans dark circles or else your wedding photographer will have lots of touching up to do. Here are some great practical do it yourself tips I found at Self.com to help you look fresh faced and wide eyed on your wedding day!

2 Minute Skin Saver - By Petra Guglielmetti
Self.com's ultra-innovative remedies really do the trick in an eye-mergency.
De-Puff that Puff!
How to fix it: "Cold compresses and caffeine ease swelling quickly," says David Bank, M.D., a dermatologist in Mount Kisco, New York. Place chilled tea bags or cucumber slices over lids for two minutes, or pop your eye cream in the fridge between applications.
How to hide it: Using a medium foundation brush (flat bristles make for easy blending), apply a thin layer of matte liquid concealer on bags, in a shade that matches the skin on your cheeks, says Nick Barose, a makeup artist in New York City. Then sweep on sheer loose powder to dull shine.

Dry Skin
How to fix it: "Over time, your skin's top layer retains less moisture," Dr. Bank says. To restore youthful suppleness, reach for products with lipids or humectants (including hyaluronic acid and glycerin), such as PureFusion Multi-tasking Eye Concentrate, $49.
How to hide it: Use a hydrating foundation or tinted moisturizer to head off cakeyness, a problem for parched skin. Pat on color (don't rub) with your fingertip to avoid exacerbating flakes. When touching up face makeup, go light on powder, which can suck up essential moisture.

Fine Lines
How to fix it: Smooth a nightly retinol treatment directly onto crow's-feet. "Skin around eyes is so thin that even a slight boost of collagen can make a big difference," says Debra Jaliman, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC.

How to hide it: Prep skin with a silicone-based primer (we like Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch, $30) to prevent makeup from creasing. Sunscreen is key to warding off new wrinkles, so opt for makeup with SPF, such as Giorgio Armani Lasting Silk UV Foundation SPF 20, $59.

Dark Circles
How to fix it:
If circles move when you pull skin taut, excess melanin may be to blame. Fade them with hydroquinone. (Try Murad Lighten and Brighten Eye Treatment, $67.) Shadows don't budge when pulled? Plump skin with moisturizer to mask darkness temporarily.

How to hide it: Choose a concealer with built-in brighteners in a shade that's one tone lighter than your natural coloring (such as Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener, $38). Apply over dark areas only, blending tint toward the inner corner of each eye, to lighten up lingering shadows.

Every bride wants flawless skin and it starts with taking time to pamper your skin. Skin care doesn't have to be expensive or confusing. Find a skin routine that works for you and remember start 3-5 months before your wedding to give your face time to adjust.  Use a basic cleanser, such as Cetaphil, morning and night. Exfoliate once or twice per week, and use a moisturizer twice per day. Lip balm is also a good idea to keep lips hydrated and soft. Drink lots of water and just take care of yourself, your health and get lots of sleep. Your pictures will thank you!

{Decor} Creative Wedding Lighting Ideas

With all the big decisions about venues, bridal flowers, and color palettes, wedding lighting may end up on the short end of a long to do list.  An important aspect to completing your overall wedding look, it adds character and personality, helping to create a truly unique and magical feel. Whether an indoor or outdoor wedding, there are many possibilities for imaginative, creative and crafty brides. From string lights to uplights, chinese lanterns to hanging candles, lighting can completely change a setting and create ambiance all on its own; dramatic, rustic, romantic, modern, colorful, or intimate.

Here are some fabulous lighting ideas, from up on a ladder DIY to a professional job, I hope will get your wedding inspiration juices flowing. To start you off, I absolutely LOVE these hanging lanterns and large string lights. Perfect for a rustic backyard summer wedding!

Photos via Pinterest

Chinese lanterns are also ideal for tented receptions - easy to string up, they throw off a soft, diffused glow, perfect for capturing those intimate moments.  Up lighting can give off as much or as little color as you want, adding dimension that pops against a white tent top.  I had awesome colored chinese lanterns at my Boston wedding and then up lights for our evening wedding in Brazil. It was these details that wowed our guests more than anything!

Ask the Editor: Should I insure my engagement ring?

Ask the Editor: I get this question all the time -  Should I insure my engagement ring?

To answer honestly, it is a truly personal and individual decision.

Gorgeous 2 carat Vintage Solitaire from Era Gem

The scenario: He dropped to one knee, said those magic words "will you marry me," and opened up a box to reveal a seriously blingTASTIC ring worth a down payment on a new set of wheels....or a perfect diamond picked especially for you in a modest setting that fits your personality. Either way, you have some serious value, monetarily and sentimentally, sitting there on your pretty little finger.

To insure or not to insure, that is the question and my answer: it all depends on your available money, the ring itself and the importance it plays in your life. And while as unromantic as insurance sounds, your peace of mind may be worth it!

What is ring insurance? An insurance policy covers the monetary value of your engagement ring in the event of damage or loss.  Renter's and homeowner's insurance covers items in your home but only up to a certain amount, potentially below the value of your engagement ring. This means you'll need to purchase an additional extension or rider just to cover it separately. Talk to your insurance agent.

You can also insure your ring through a speciality jewelry insurance company, which may cover more than general homeowner's insurance. Most will replace your ring instead of just handing over the cash. I've heard AAA will cover you for less that $100 a year! Worth the investment, I'd say.

Photo via Wedding by Color

Who Should Buy: Anyone with jewelry with perceived value, be it $500 or $50,000 and when the sentimental value outweighs the dollar amount.  Purchasing an insurance policy not over covers you financially but also says what your ring stands for is important to protect. Rings can be replaced but sentiment is priceless.

Questions To Ask Before You Choose a Policy: (from The Knot)

 - Is the ring covered if you lose it accidentally, or only if it's stolen? How will the company replace the ring -- with a check? Or will they require you to purchase a replacement through a specified jeweler?
 - What if it's a vintage ring or other unique piece? How will the quality and size of your diamond -- and that of a replacement if needed -- be documented?
 - Is the ring insured to full cost or a fraction of it?
 - How will you need to prove the ring vanished if you make a claim?
 - Are there any circumstances that aren't covered?

What you should know: Remember to keep your receipts; you'll also need to get an appraisal.  Ask your jewelers if they provide coverage through their own insurance company. Remember to read the fine print and make sure your rings are covered in all situations from theft to loss to that pesky little trash disposal! If you are moving after the wedding, make sure the coverage policy follows you to your new home.

Photo via eHow.com
Costs:
You can usually expect to pay $1 to $2 per $100 that it would cost to replace your rings. The higher the replacement value, the higher the yearly cost....simple math, although it may be higher in cities with higher theft rates.

Bottom line, if you can't afford insurance, keep your ring at home in possible ring threatening situations.

The ultimate question is how much is your engagement ring worth to you. I was looking at my own wedding rings the other day and 100% visualizing the possibility of losing or damaging them. I thought WHOA, it could really happen and why am I not prepared....and less because of how much money the hubs invested in them but more for how much I have invested in them emotionally.

Insuring your engagement ring may be an extra cost you don't need OR you may be the kind of person who won't step outside without a signed policy close at hand. Either way, think about it, ask questions and keep your sentimentals safe.

Happy Engagement,

{Awesome Idea} DIY Bridal Shower Wishing Well Centerpiece

Hello de Lovelies! I've been on the road for the last week and thus have sorely neglected you. I tried to send an update via my smart (ass) phone, but alas, it, and the connectivity of rural United States, has failed me. I am at a real computer now and just HAD to share with you this super creative and easy centerpiece project I found at Real Simple...in fact it is in their May edition. Called with Wishing Well, this is an easy, unique and personal way for friends and family to celebrate, advise, encourage a bride-to-be at her wedding shower. On top of that, DIY wedding projects are inexpensive and fun to put together!

Super simple instructions:
  • Cut strips of colored paper about six inches long and pass them out as guests come in.
  • Ask guests to write out their best wish, wedding advice, favorite memory, or personal note for the bride.
  • Twist the papers around a pen and toss them into a large bowl.
  • Have the bride read the messages over dessert and enjoy the show!
  • At the end of the shower, gather up all slips and create a sweet memory book or small wish box as a keepsake for the bride.
  • Bridal shower game twist: Interview the lucky groom, write groom related questions on the strips and see if the bride knows as much about her sweetie as she thinks she does!
Hope you enjoyed this little project from the road. You know, I love all things DIY, practical and fun and this is just perfect for a bridal tea, (check here for DIY tea favor ideas) shower or wedding party get together!

{Real International Wedding} A Rustic Italian Wedding with a Little Glam

Hello de Lovlies! Well it is about time we got off our keesters over here and brought you the good stuff...yeah some more awesome Real Wedding eye candy. Since we focus on multicultural and international weddings, you know this has to be a good one; full of color, romance, in some far flung exotic destination....well ok, Italy, not so far flung but still totally awesome! We found this little gem over at Boho Weddings, sent to them by photographers Bayly and Moore and we send a heap of thanks for letting us show off this wedding deliciousness.

This is a story of a boy and a girl in love, a gorgeous wedding location, and simple yet stunning style that sets us all a-flutter. You have to see it to believe it! I know this wedding has made the blog rounds but I can't not share the important wedding message it inspires: When you allow your personality and passion to dictate your path, wedding magic will happen.

This super cute couple is Graziano and Jenny and they were married on the 23rd of July 2011 in Italy with 80 guests in attendance. The two met while working in Rome and took a year to plan their very traditional Italian wedding. They describe it as ‘A day full of emotion and laughter. It was the wedding we wanted!’

The centerpiece of this celebration was naturally the breathtaking location, the beautiful region of Veneto, rich in Renaissance and Palladian villas and clearly the perfect choice.  But first prize really has to go to Jenny's daring dress choice, Valentino, dotted with tiny flower appliques and cinched with a black bow.  Add those spectacular shoes (you know I love shoes) and you've got Best In Show!

The wedding details were simple: black and white to mirror the dress. Jenny's baby's breath bouquet was light and delicate, a perfect match for their simple, traditional, and elegant approach. Graziano was dapper in his black Prada suit.

.

I love the fact Jenny and Graziano stayed true to Italian tradition when choosing a location . The festivites were held in Jenny's home town where her father walked her through the streets on the way to the ceremony. It helped that the region is also rich in history and culture, filled with classic architecture and breathtaking vistas.

The reception was simple and elegant with black and white decorations and simple white hydrangeas as centerpieces and venue decorations. They served traditional Italian fare; pasta, seafood and meat with vegetables and a lovely three tiered cake for dessert.

Planning Advice from the Newlyweds:
"Don’t believe people when they tell you that 'details are not so important', because that day you won’t notice anything. You’ll notice everything but you just won’t care You can't change them and you will be too tired and excited. But take care of details anyway." Jenny
